Judy Garland Documentary-the Real Judy Wanting Her Money Back

When you think of Judy Garland, you probably see her breakthrough role as Dorothy in 1939’s ‘The Wizard of Oz,’ or perhaps 1944’s ‘Meet Me in St. Louis,’ or 1954’s ‘A Star Is Born.’. Jan 28, 2020 Judy Garland should have been a wealthy woman at the end of her life. After all, Garland starred in The Wizard of Oz, one of the most culturally important and successful movies of all time.

The following selections include several people I'll be rooting for at the Academy Awards this Sunday, including the frontrunners for Best Actor (Joaquin Phoenix, 'Joker'), Best Actress ( Cynthia Erivo, 'Harriet' and Renée Zellweger, 'Judy'), Best Supporting Actor (Brad Pitt, 'Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood') and Best Supporting Actress (Laura Dern, 'Marriage Story'). I also admired Best Picture nominees 'Parasite,' 'Once Upon A Time in Hollywood,' 'Jojo Rabbit,' 'Little Women' and 'The Irishman,' which are all included on my list. And in the shorts category, 'Hair Love,' by Matthew Cherry.

As for this year's Film Independent Spirit Awards, which will take place Saturday, there were several nominees not named by the Academy that I've honored on this list, including Best Picture nominee 'A Hidden Life,' Best First Feature nominee 'The Last Black Man in San Francisco,'and Best International Film nominee 'Portrait of a Lady on Fire.' There is also the Best Director nominee Alma Har'el ('Honey Boy'); Best Actress nominee Alfre Woodard ('Clemency'); Best Supporting Actress nominees Jennifer Lopez ('Hustlers') and Octavia Spencer ('Luce'); and Best Supporting Actor nominee Shia LaBeouf.

Noah Baumbach's portrait of a couple's failed marriage is a very moving family story and one of the best movies of the year thanks in large part to incredible performances by Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson, and supporting roles by Laura Dern, Julie Hagerty, Ray Liotta, Alan Alda and Wallace Shawn. It's a heartbreaker as you watch the too-true realities of how the divorce process can wear down the civility of what started out as a loving relationship.
