Eddie Money is sort of like everyone’s dad. He loves terrible jokes—dad jokes, if you will—so much so that he has been known to solicit from his fans online. He frequently gives interviews with his wife by his side, and she’s not afraid to give him a hard pinch when she senses his notorious outspokenness is about to get him in trouble—again. He and his family currently star in their own reality show, which features plenty of Money’s five children rolling their eyes at his hijinks in much the same way many of us have done at our embarrassing dads.
Except for one thing: I don’t know about your dad, but my pops hasn’t sold 30 million albums, had a string of radio hits that helped to define an era and headlined some of the biggest venues in the world.
But Eddie Money has, and when he performs on Fri., May 3 at the Silver Reef Casino and Resort’s Event Center, he’ll bring with him hit songs—and dad jokes—aplenty.
Curiously, Money didn’t grow up intending to be a musician. Instead, he wanted to be like his dad, a police officer. Born Edward Mahoney, Money grew up in a large Irish Catholic family in Brooklyn, and followed in the footsteps of his grandfather and father when he became an NYPD trainee. However, music’s siren song called to him, and it wasn’t long before he gave up police work and headed west to Berkeley, Calif. to try his luck as a full-time musician.
Making the rounds of Berkeley’s bars and clubs proved fortuitous for the aspiring rock star, and it wasn’t long before Money found himself, if not exactly in the money, on his way there, scoring a deal with Columbia Records.
What followed was a period of unqualified success, as Money charted one Billboard hit after another, beginning with “Baby Hold On” and “Two Tickets to Paradise,” and following those with “Shakin’” and “Think I’m in Love.” Money bolstered radio play with videos that showcased his brand of natural wit and soon found themselves on heavy rotation on MTV and VH1.
At that point, as Money battled some very public addiction issues, it seemed the musician’s remarkable run had drawn to a close, but instead the rocker proved he was made of stronger stuff. He’d spent a career turning his working-class roots and lack of critical acclaim into badges of honor—something his fanbase found all too relatable—and his supporters were only too willing to rally around him as he mounted a comeback.
That comeback came in the form of the appropriately titled Can’t Hold Back, an album that yielded a trio of songs that remained radio staples since their release, “Take Me Home Tonight,” “I Wanna Go Back,” and “Walk On Water.” As far as the Billboard charts were concerned, Money was pure money.
These days, he’s clean, sober and cracking self-admitted terrible dad jokes at every opportunity. He also continues to tour, and three of his five children regularly get the chance to roll their eyes and groan at his humor, as they comprise part of his backing band. His jokes may not land, but his songs are right on the money.
Eddie Money plays at 7pm Fri., May 3 at the Silver Reef Casino and Resort’s Event Center. Tickets are $45-$65 and more info can be found at http://www.silverreefcasino.com. Follow the Silver Reef on Facebook to see all their upcoming events.
